Trumpet Tutors

Johnny is an active trumpeter based in Hong Kong, a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he majored in trumpet. He performs regularly with various orchestras and ensembles throughout Hong Kong.

Lau began studying the trumpet in secondary school, training under notable teachers including Benjamin Chan, Elaine Yeung, Joseph Ngan, and Fung Ka Hing. He frequently participated in masterclasses with renowned artists such as Sergei Nakariakov, James Thompson, Chris Martin, Éric Aubier, Hannes Läubin, and German Brass.

After graduating from the University of East Anglia in the UK, Liu served as a trumpeter with the UEA Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2016, performing at various venues across the UK. To further his studies in trumpet performance, he joined the Bachelor of Music program at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2021.

Lau engages in diverse musical projects, recordings and performances in jazz and pop music, collaborating with artists such as Jason Kui at Ko Shan Fest, Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra, and participating in the recording of Lil’ Ashes (小塵埃) - "Let Me Go" (煙消散了). He has also performed at events like COLLAB Jan Curious x Fountain de Chopin Big Band and Free Jazz Festivals.

Since returning to Hong Kong in 2016, Lau has been a regular member in various ensembles, regularly appearing with groups such as the Happy-Go-Lucky Big Band, Fountain de Chopin Big Band, and the Hong Kong Symphony Wind Orchestra.

Graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK with a Master's degree in Trumpet Performance, Jonathan studied under John Miller and Murray Greig during his study in RNCM. In the meantime, Jonathan had numerous performance opportunities, including work with orchestras, solo performances, worship, chamber music, and recording sessions.

Before pursuing further studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Jonathan graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a Bachelor's degree in Trumpet Performance, studied under Robert Samuel. While studying in Wales, he was also an active cornet player in brass bands, performing at various concerts and receiving high praise from both peers and local communities.

In addition to his extensive performance experience, Jonathan also have had the opportunity to learn from various internationally renowned trumpeters and attend masterclasses with artists such as Marc Geujon, Matthias Hoffs, Matilda Lloyd, and Mike Lovatt.
