Hong Kong’s new generation of conductor and classical saxophonist; Chung Hoi YAN (Oliver) is active in music activities all over the world. Oliver Yan is the current Assistant Conductor of the Stephen F. Austin Symphony Orchestra (SFASO).
Oliver started his musical training in high school, pursuing saxophone and conducting performances in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Italy and the United States. He has been invited as a guest conductor in many ensembles and orchestras around the world including the Brescia Master Orchestra, SFA Saxophone Ensemble, Hong Kong Baptist University Composition Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Youth Saxophone Choir.
Oliver has worked with many great musicians that have heavily influenced his passion to present his music on the stage. Oliver has participated in multiple masterclasses with conductors, including Donald Schleicher, Douglas Bostock, Larry Rachleff, and Nicolas Pasquest.
As a classical saxophonist, Oliver was tasked with presenting a lecture recital; presenting the Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble by David Maslanka in his undergraduate graduation recital. Good instrumental playing is a monumental aspect in one’s journey to become a conductor. Along with conducting masterclasses, Oliver has participated in masterclasses focussed on saxophone performance; led by Arno Bornkamp, Kenneth Tse, Timothy McAllister, and Vincent David, etc.
Since beginning his musical journey at twelve years of age, Oliver has a relentless pursuit of developing his musical skills on the podium and on his horn. He studied saxophone under Dr. Tak Chiu Wong in Hong Kong Baptist University and studied conducting under Mr. Man Ho Choi and Mr. Kelvin Ngai. Currently, Oliver is pursuing a double Masters Degree in Saxophone Performance and Conducting under the tutelage of Dr. Gregory Grabowski and Dr. Nathan Nabb/Dr. Bob Eason in their respective fields in Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas.

Lesson Booking Procedure: | |
1. | Submit student information; The tutor will respond according to the information.Messages between student/tutor will be screenshotted or forwarded through M5 Music.* |
2. | Discuss and arrange the lesson time, location, tuition fee, etc. |
3. | The lesson will be confirmed after completing the payment of the Tuition of the First Lesson. |
4. | Take the lesson according to the booking time. |
5. | The second lesson and beyond are arranged by the student/tutor themselves. |

Before student/parent makes payment: | |
i. | Some tutors do NOT accept direct contact. |
ii. | Some tutors will call student/parent with a “Hidden Number”.* |
iii. | Some tutors accept to contact student/parent through various ways.* |
* | After contacting the tutor, if the student/parent intends to take a lesson, the tuition of the first lesson has to be paid to M5 Music before having lesson. |
The tuition of the first lesson is charged by M5 Music (accept Bank Transfer or FPS); Students do NOT need to pay additional fee for the first lesson.
Starting from the second lesson, please pay tuition directly to the tutor. Generally, four lessons will be calculated as one session. Please check with your tutor about the payment method for the second lesson and beyond.
M5 Music and all tutors do NOT offer free trial lessons. All “trial lessons” are considered as the “first lesson”.
Student’s absent must be proposed 24 hours before the lesson time. Otherwise, it will be regarded as “Impromptu Absence”. Providing a make-up lesson or not will be decided by the tutor him/herself. Hereby declare, M5 Music will NOT provide refund for “Impromptu Absence” even if the tutor does not want to provide a make-up lesson.
If the first lesson is affected by typhoon and rainstorm warning, M5 Music can assist both parties to reschedule the lesson.
We only provide a refund if the tutor is absent on the original booking time, and cannot provide a make-up lesson for the next 14 days. Apart from this, we do not accept any refund request.
