About my teaching, goals, ABRSM, Students, lesson duration and Venue

I am a strong believer that teaching is to teach the student to become their own teacher, as well as making sure that you have a very solid and good understanding of the technical fundamentals. Since I have studied with many Flute Masters; to name a few: James Galway, Patrick Gallois, Marc Grauwels, Raffaele Trevisani, Adriana Ferreira, Davide Formisano….. I learnt many methods that could help my students to make great progress with the right method and training. And I also have so many experience in performing so I can share my insight on different pieces and live performance to my students.

I have nothing against taking the exam, as I think it is beneficial for students to have a goal to strike for, as it could drive them to practice more and improve faster. BUT, ABRSM is not the final destination for my students, my goal of teaching is to let my student—

  1. Enjoy the artistry of flute,
  2. Deveplop their flute fundamentals and musicianship
  3. To develop their own personality and become an artist.

And I teach all students who are aged 5 years and above, and all levels. Because I think music is for everyone, and it is joyful to learn flute as we have so many beautiful pieces and the flute is such a charming and beautiful instrument. Although I don’t need anexam to prove myself, I know some of you might be curious. I obtained my Grade 8 piano at 9 years old and ATCL at 14; flute grade 8 at 11 and LTCL at 14, and I was accepted into Queen’s College as a music talent. That doesn’t mean I am a good flutist, musician or teacher at 14. It only means I started early and practiced hard, but I am sure I am a horrible teacher at that time with no experience and method. For me a good teacher must be sympathetic, positive, kind, scientific and with lots of experience on stage.

I have many students in Hong Kong before I went to study in Europe; I have taught the flute class in Yip’s, and many secondary schools. Two of my students were accepted to study music in university (HKBU, EDU), and of course many of them got distinction in grade 8 and ATCL. But most importantly, most of them enjoy playing the flute a lot! I have good friendship with my students and I enjoy teaching them very much and guiding them through challenges.

As an experienced teacher, I don’t think 60mins lesson is effective and neccesary for my students, I hate wasting both student and my time. I will only give 30 and 45 mins lesson to most of my students. Although I prefer weekly lessons, as it is easier to keep the progress, its not obligated, I totally understand everyone has different situation that we can discuss to see how to work out. But if you are very serious about making a musical career, we can discuss and make a plan, for example more frequent lesson with less charge….

We will have lesson in my studio in North Point, 400 sq. feet with piano. I wont travel to any of my student’s home to teach as I am very busy. And I will organise student concert monthly at my studio for my students to perform (for free of course), as I think that perform have to be practiced. For my advanced students I will play some chamber music with you in my free time with pleasure. And also for my advanced students I will try to organise pianist to accompany our lesson in every few lessons.
